We Are The Champions! - Match Report

Perth High School are Scottish Champions 2003. Our girls' football team rounded off their most successful season, with victory over St. Mungo's High, Falkirk in the SSFA Junior Girls Shield Final, held at City Stadium, Livingston on June 1st.

The girls had been involved in some fantastic matches on the road to the final, most notably perhaps the away tie against Nicolson Institute in Stornoway! The final itself transpired to be the most dramatic of all, the game being won on penalties after an entertaining 1-1 draw at the end of 70 minutes.

<img src="http://www.perthhigh.co.uk/images/59.jpg" style="border: solid 1px #000000;" align="right">Perth High had taken the lead early in the first half through Danny Millar in what was her first start of the campaign. Danny took full advantage of an excellent through-ball by Lori Hutcheson to slide the ball past St. Mungo's keeper.

Danny again had the opportunity to extend the lead in the first half, but with only the keeper to beat, she shot wide of the target. Captain Lori Hutcheson also came close, but her long range strike from well outside the box was well held by the keeper.

Both teams came out fighting in the second half, with Perth High determined to build on their lead and St. Mungo's looking to get back into the match, but a combination of intense heat and tired legs was beginning to conspire against the players. St. Mungo's earlier chances had done little to trouble Corrie Davidson in goal until the Perth High defence, convinced that the opposition had been played offside, allowed St. Mungo's striker to sneak through to equalise.

However, encouraged by a fantastic (and very vocal) travelling support comprising teachers, pupils, family and friends, the girls held on and could in fact have regained the lead with a late effort by Kirsty Robertson, spectacularly tipped around the post by the St. Mungo's keeper.

Past weeks had confirmed that even the biggest of cup finals could be settled through penalty kicks and this one would be no different. Initial nerves were almost immediately allayed as Corrie Davidson converted the first for Perth High and St. Mungo's opening effort sailed over the bar. Further reassurance followed as Georgi McKinlay comfortably netted the second while the opposition's effort rebounded off the crossbar. Lori Hutcheson then scored the third knowing that St. Mungo's would need to score to remain in contention. Corrie Davidson then demonstrated exactly why she has been selected to represent Scotland in the U15 national squad, spectacularly saving St. Mungo's third, to ensure that Perth High Girls' are Scottish Champions 2003.

FT: Perth High School 1, St. Mungo's High 1 (Perth High won 3-0 on penalties)
