BBC News School Report 2010
BBC Schools Report Gives Perth High Schools Students The Chance To Make Their Own Headlines.
S3 Modern Studies students from Perth High School have been brushing up on their journalistic and reporting skills with a little help from materials and staff from the BBC.
Senior BBC editor and presenter, Sandy Murray, gave first-hand support as the Perth High School mentor when he visited the school.
On 11th March 2010, 70 Scottish Schools will take part in a UK- wide News Day, simultaneously creating videos, audio and text-based news reports an publishing them on their school websites, which have been linked to the BBC.
During ‘News Day 2010’ students and their work may be featured on the BBC’s various news outlets on TV, radio and online including Reporting Scotland, News Drive, The News Channel, Breakfast News, the One O’clock and Six O’clock News and Newsround. The School report website will also become a TV channel and a radio station streaming pupils’ news reports and coverage of school-based activities throughout the school day, available via the BBC’s red button service.
This year schools are also attempting to set the world Record for the largest Interactive Weather Report. To help with this, pupils from the school will be taking the temperature at 9.15am and submitting it to BBC Weather who will be compiling it into a weather report.
As well as the news happening on that day, the Perth High broadcast will feature other topics such as the current social and economic situation in South Africa, the Perth High School International Tie, the school uniform debate, Battle of The Bands, an interview with Geoff Brown, the St. Johnstone chairman, wheelchair accessibility in the school and the campaign to block the proposed incinerator at the Binn Farm.
BBC News presenter and former teacher, Huw Edwards, is also working on School Report along with regular BBC Scotland presenters Gary Robertson, Glenn Campbell and David Currie.
Huw Edwards says, “Over the years I’ve run many journalism workshops in Schools. So I’ve seen how much fun it can be and how much can be learnt when there are real deadlines, real audiences and real standards to meet. I’m involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I wan to share the principles of a good journalist.”
BBC Scotland’s Gary Robertson says, “I’m really looking forward to School News report and delighted to be involved again this year. It’s a great project which gives youngsters across Scotland an inside into broadcasting and newsgathering. Coming up with the ideas for new stories, interviewing guests and putting together finished reports will hopefully inspire the journalist of tomorrow.”
The teacher responsible for the project, Mr Cook, said that “it’s been a fascinating process watching the pupils developing their newsgathering and presenting skills. The pre-recorded clips are nearly all ready, but the proof of whether or not the day will have been a success will be how well they perform live in front of the cameras on Thursday the 11th.”
