Bronze Training Trip - Group 1 (13/5/04)

21 Perth High School pupils recently completed their Bronze training for the coveted Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The pupils were walking between Linn of Dee and Glen Quoich, a distance of approximately 18km. Below is a brief account of the two days as seen through the eyes of Karen Hynd, 3E3, along with some pics of the event.

A report by Karen Hynd 3E3.....

We set off at 09:15am all with a feeling of great excitement. That feeling was killed off swiftly when about one and a half hours in to the journey someone threw up all over the bus. We endured 45 more minutes on the bus reeking of sick (no wonder everyone was keen to get started).

Our group walked for a few hours, stopping only occasionally to have breaks for lunch and drinks. We finally reached Derry Lodge and set up our tents and made tea. In the evening the teachers played games with us which entertained us for a while, but nothing was more entertaining than Mr Miller laughing at someone for tripping over the guy ropes, only for him to turn around and do it himself. Everyone got to sleep fine despite the fact that Mr Miller had terrorised us with pre-bedtime horror stories.

The 2nd day started very early for us, 5.15am to be precise (thanks to Natalie). Anyway, we made our breakfast and set off on an uphill climb, with Mr Brown and Mr Jasper. The path through the hills was only about 15cm wide which meant we had to go in single file and not lean towards the water or the weight of the rucksack would have ensured we got a good wash. When we got to the flat road we decided to entertain ourselves for the last bit of the journey with some "singing", (Mr Brown even joined in!). So, after several hours of walking and a rather garbled version of McFly's "5 Colours in her hair" we arrived at the final point with a feeling of pretty good achievement.

On the way home we thought we deserved a rest so we relaxed and listened to the radio whilst poor Mr Reid had to chauffeur us back to Braemar for ice cream then back to Perth to rest our weary legs.

Over the two days we had great fun. We slipped into the river whilst cleaning our pots, got chased by deer whenever we went to the toilet and got knee deep in mud whilst on our way up a hill, but it was all brilliant fun. So from me and all of the members of my group, thanks Mr Illsley and all the rest of the staff who where there!
