Web Safety at PHS

Over the next few months PHSl is embarking upon an extensive internet safety programme involving all pupils from S1 to S6, parent presentations and whole staff awareness presentations.

The resources being used are part of an education programme called Thinkuknow, developed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre(CEOP). . The Thinkuknow presentation is aimed at young people between the ages of 11 - 16 and focuses on key messages:

How to have fun online

How to stay in control online

How to report online

Guidance staff have been trained to allow them to deliver Thinkuknow to their caseload pupils, and all classes will have the opportunity to view the presentation and to discuss key issues arising from the materials. The presentation will then be included in the S1 PSE syllabus and delivered to all new S1 pupils in future years.

An icon will be placed upon the front page of the school website which will allow a direct link to the Report Abuse section of the Thinkuknow website. At the moment you can do so by clicking on the link at the top of this article.

Parents will also have the opportunity to attend a presentation which aims to provide further information about CEOP, to bridge the ‘gap of knowledge’ around the internet and to provide advice and tips for parents around internet safety.

CEOP plays a key role, both here in the UK and abroad, in the protection of young people, families and society from paedophiles and sex offenders; in particular those who use the internet and other new technologies in the sexual exploitation of children.

There is no doubt that the internet can be a fantastic place for young people to learn, have fun and engage with their friends and families. There are risks, however, which young people need to be aware of to ensure that they can protect themselves. Perth High School hopes that the introduction of Thinkuknow, and its inclusion within the PSE programme, will help to empower children and parents with the knowledge and skills to manage the risks and to seek help if necessary.
