Curriculum - S3/S4
All pupils study English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious & Moral Education and Personal & Social Education. They also all study a science subject, a modern foreign language and a social subject but in these areas there is an element of choice to cater for individual pupil needs. Each pupil's course is then completed by the opportunity to study a creative & aesthetic subject and a choice of two further subjects from our Option Choice Sheet. During Fourth Year all pupils are given the opportunity to participate in a structured work placement with a company or business in the local area.
All pupils have the opportunity to be presented for eight Standard Grade Courses although this may be amended in consultation with the family in the light of considerations such as learning difficulties.
There are three different levels of course within Standard Grade - Foundation, General and Credit. Foundation level is the basic level mainly suited to those pupils who would not have expected to get an 'O' Grade award in the past. General level is suitable for pupils in the middle range of ability. Credit level is the most difficult level. Biology, Chemistry & Physics are only available at Credit and General levels.
Pupils taking different levels of the same subject may be taught together in the same class and are able to learn some of the same things. Pupils generally take different levels in different subjects so that they can tackle the more difficult work in the subjects where they have particular ability. Awards from all 3 levels are given on a single scale with bands from 1 to 7.
