No probs
You need four things in your answer:
1) a quote from the linking sentence which links back to the paragraph before
2) an explanation in your own words of what the previous paragraph was about
3) a quote from the linking sentence which links forward to the paragraph after
4) an explanation in your own words of what the following paragraph was about.
Each of these bits is worth half a mark! |

Hi Ewan,
I think you need to spend a wee bit of time on your spelling!!!
Apart from SARCASM (a comment intended to hurt) or irony (saying the opposite of what you mean) there are loads of tones, hundreds of them! The main thing is to think about the writer's attitude. Irony, sarcasm and humour are the most commonly asked about.
Within humour the comment could be tongue-in-cheek, facetious, lighthearted, mocking...
Your tone could be complimentary, critical, flattering, obsequious (sucking up), chatty, scathing and so on.
Have a look at this bit from the school website which has some sample tone answers to give you some ideas:

In terms of connotations, you have to write what the word makes you think of, rather than what it means.
Remember the skinny example? Although it means the same as slim, skinny has negative connotations implying that it's too thin.
Sometimes it helps to think of a word you could have used instead, and think of the shades of difference in meaning between them. |
