Green Flag Award for SchoolBy Joanne Oliver on 3/7/2003
In the last few weeks Perth High School has become an 'Eco-School' and been awarded a special environmental prize known as the Green Flag Award - only the third secondary school in Scotland to achieve this.
Thanks mainly to the efforts of Mrs Jean Pedgrift and her committee of pupils - including a willing workforce of Ryan Bell, Ian Scobie and Craig Melloy - the school was given the award. This took place a few weeks ago, when a tense judging process took place and it was decided that the school more than met the judges criteria. Being granted the award is recognition of how much hard work and dedication went into the project and was well deserved. » Eco-Schools at Perth High The Eco-School judges expect several things to be able to award the Green Flag. They feel it is important that the whole school is kept informed of progress and development of the project. In addition to this they advise that the Eco-Committee meet regularly to discuss plans and targets. They also recommend that some of the monitoring that goes on should be used for the curriculum. [thpic=00120.jpg] To tackle such a massive task the Eco-committee was formed and five targets were set with each group being led by a member of staff and helped by a small number of pupils. The areas needing attention were: » School Grounds - Mr Lidstone » Paper Recycling - Miss Jennifer Loudon and School Prefects » Litter - Mrs Jean Pedgrift » Saving Electricity - Mrs M Tattersfield » Healthy Eating - Mr A Robertson Although all of what has been done in the school has been beneficial, perhaps the main area and best transformation has been the greenhouse area which was slightly derelict until very recently. The area now provides a place for both teachers and pupils to relax and enjoy the surroundings which include a sensory garden and colourful mosaic paving stones designed by S1 pupils. There is also a picnic area with tables made by Mr Reid in the Tech Department and several pupils. Ultimately, this is a project which has improved the school environment and has given areas of the school a facelift. This could not have been done without the great contribution given by Mrs Pedgrift. The Eco-Schools Green Flag was proudly displayed at the School Prizegiving in the City Hall. » Eco-Schools at Perth High PHS Home | Latest Headlines | News archive |
