How Do I Find Out Which Careers would suit Me?

By Miss MacLean on 1/10/2004

To make an informed career decision you need to know about yourself. You should think about your interests and skills and how you can link them to opportunities.

Your first step is to consider the following questions:
· How important do I want work to be in my life?
· What do I want from work or a course? e.g. experience, independence
· What can I offer to work or a course? e.g. willingness to learn new skills

Remember your interests, work experience and circumstances may change and you will need to ask yourself these questions again from time to time.

Next: Look at Career Ideas
· What does work or a course offer? e.g. responsibility, learning
· What does work or a course demand? e.g. a positive attitude, personal motivation

See below for help available in your school to provide you with career ideas.

Finally
· Begin to make a plan
· Research the opportunities open to you - find out what they are!
· Make a list your main options
· Write down what you could do next - for example what you need to find out about, who you might want to speak to, or even what you will have to thin about.

It can be useful to keep a note of the resources you have looked at.
