Perth High at the Oscars?

An animated German language film produced by PHS pupils received rave reviews from critics when it was premiered at Dundee Contemporary Arts on Saturday 2nd February. Does Hollywood now beckon? Wallace and Grommit...... be afraid! Be very afraid! We're coming to get you!

Entitled "Gib mir die Fernbedienung!", the film was made by Mr Dewar's S4 German class over a total of some 20 hours from August to October 2007. The title translates as "Gie's the remote!" and is a humourous 6 minute series of channel-hopping sketches based on some well known TV programmes, presented entirely in German (with a small French cameo by a couple of mystery actors) by the pupils, with Scots English subtitles.

The film was premiered in a special DCA "Perthshire Schools Screening" session along with two other animated foreign language films produced by pupils from Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy and Blairgowrie High School.

PHS pupils Suzanne Brain and Samantha Johnston attended the event along with Mr Dewar and introduced their film to the assembled audience. Thanks to both girls for giving up their time and representing their school in such a positive manner.

Thanks also go to David and Stacey of the production company Media Arts & Services Scotland for their invaluable expertise and help in making the idea a reality, to Meryl James of PKC for securing the funding for the project and for her encouragement throughout the process, and to Joe Hall of DCA for her support in publicising and hosting the event.

So look out for forthcoming screenings on a plasma screen or at an assembly near you! Who knows, this may only be the beginning of foreign language film making in PHS!
