S1 Geog Trip
Click here to find out about the S1 visit to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society at the Fair Maid's House in Perth.
As part of their Map Skills Unit, 1B1, 1E4 and 1H5 explored the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s headquarters, and their collection of amazing maps and artefacts, at the Fair Maid’s House in Perth.
Pupils were fascinated by the spinning globe in the Earth Room, which showed them projections of continental drift, sea-surface temperatures, and population distribution and density.
In the Explorers’ Room, pupils were transported to a study that was filled with maps, Lonely Planet guides, atlases, and weird and wonderful artefacts, including some fossilised dinosaur poo (coprolite)! Pupils also looked closely at maps that dated from 1573 to the present day, and discussed how Perth (and mapping in general) had changed over time.
Finally, pupils were asked to draw their own maps to show important places in their childhood. This activity prompted some very interesting discussions, and some lovely sketches.
The Fair Maid’s House is open to the public on weekdays 12.30-4pm until 31 October. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
The RSGS’ winter programme of talks will begin next month, and these will be advertised in the school bulletin. More information is available on the RSGS’ website: http://www.rsgs.org/
